City of Shasta Lake Drought Surcharge
Based on drought conditions within California, the Bureau of Reclamation reduced the City of Shasta Lake’s normal domestic water supply allocation. In order to augment the City’s domestic water supply for the 2009 water year, the City Council approved an emergency water purchase.
To offset a portion of this greater than normal water purchase cost, the City Council enacted a Drought Surcharge to be collected over a five-month period beginning May 2009. A typical 5/8” residential metered water customer will pay $3 each month for five-months, or $15 total over the entire water year. Customers with meters larger than 5/8” will have a surcharge greater in excess of $3 based on the specific delivery capacity of their water meter.
